FAQ

What are "The Piglets"?

We are a group of amateur radio operators who found it difficult to connect with others through our local radio club. The club offered many rich opportunities for us to volunteer with local emergency management and learn from visiting presenters but we found ourselves wanting more.

It first began when a few of us mentioned that we wanted to learn Morse Code. That lead us to buy some Morserino’s in bulk from the manufacturer. Those kits required us to hone our soldering skills which in turn, got more juices flowing. When one of us gets an idea, and there always seems to be someone to go along for the ride. We may be homebrewing some new gear, jumping in the car to go activate a state park for POTA or just drinking beers at the bar. The only certainty is that we will be having fun while doing it!

But why the name?

Amateur radio operators are colloquially called “hams”.  Before we ever thought of making a club, someone realized that our small group of friends were mostly younger amateur radio operators. What are young hams, you ask? Piglets! The name may have stuck with us, but it certainly doesn’t mean that we are restrictive to who join our ranks.

The Piglets are young at heart. We are those who are always learning and are up to a challenge.

What club frequencies should I add to my HT/mobile?

Piglet-1: 147.475 simplex, with 77 hz tone squelch

Mobile Talk-In and Nets:  Hortonville K9EOC UHF repeater (443.95, +5 offset, 77 hz tone)

Piglet-2: 445.475 simplex, with 77 hz tone squelch

Set your radio to Tone Squelch, not just Tone mode (sometimes labeled as C-CDC, or use both R-CTCSS and T-CTCSS). Without tone squelch, at crowded ham events like Hamvention, you may hear unwanted conversations or adjacent channel interference.
